Learn the foundations of observational drawing using botanical materials gathered at Bernheim as inspiration. Through close observation, students will slow down, sharpen their perception, and explore new ways of seeing the natural world. While observational drawing focuses on realistically depicting an object, it also offers a grounding, meditative practice that encourages presence and connection.

Teaching artist Teresa Koester will guide students through approachable, reliable techniques that break down visual information into manageable steps, helping build confidence along the way. The course covers line, shape, value, and texture while exploring charcoal, pencil, pen, and ink. Classes will take place indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.

About the Instructor

Teresa Koester wears many hats at Bernheim. She’s the Arts Program Coordinator, art educator, and a budding naturalist. Teresa hails from Louisville, is a painter and printmaker, and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Kentucky. Teresa has spent her 26-year career teaching art to all ages. Nature is her favorite classroom, especially at her beloved Bernheim.
