A Circle through Time: Guided Hike with 2025 Artist in Residence Max Sorenson.
November 16 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join artist and conservationist Max Sorenson for a guided hike exploring the concept and process of ecological succession. Experience firsthand how disturbance and renewal shape the diverse plant communities that thrive at Bernheim.
The hike will begin at the Garden Pavilion and continue through the Sun and Shade Loop and Big Prairie, covering about 1.25 miles with stops along the way for discussion and observation.
About the Artist
Sorenson’s background bridges art and ecology. He has served as a visiting artist at the Aldo Leopold Foundation, where he contributed an exhibition and artist talk during Leopold Week, the foundation’s annual virtual speaker series. His residencies also include the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Cedar Point Biological Station in Ogallala, Nebraska, and Tranquilo Bay Eco-Adventure Lodge in Bocas del Toro, Panamá.
In 2024, Sorenson worked with the Institute for Applied Ecology on a native seed collection crew, gathering seeds from locally adapted, disturbance-tolerant plants for use in arid lands restoration projects. Most recently, he worked in La Crosse, Wisconsin, engaging in a range of restoration and land management projects throughout the Driftless Region.
