
As summer finally heats up, so is the Edible Garden! It’s been a productive time at Bernheim’s Living Building Challenge construction site. Though the site is still under construction, in the past two weeks, Bernheim volunteers, interns and members of Bernheim’s horticultural staff planted the first assortment of edible plants in raised beds of the eastern and southern petals of the edible garden.

The team planted an assortment of colorful kale and kohlrabi, as well as swiss chard and cabbage. Apart from these colorful seedlings, beans, tomatoes, okra, shallots, melons, fennel, and several assortments of cucumbers and squash have begun to make an appearance in the garden beds. We’ll be keeping an eye out for tomato blossoms and “dragon’s egg” cucumbers that are big, round, and white in color!
The arbor is being installed and has already made a big impression on the landscape.
The last of the concrete walkways that outline the garden’s flower shape were poured last Thursday.
A team of volunteers from UPS came out one day to help install gravel around the raised beds and get all the petal beds ready for more planting.
