GABRIELLA BOROS, 2020 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE UPDATE
The coronavirus pandemic has forced many of us to work from home. That was no different for 2020 AIR, Gabriella Boros, who was scheduled to arrive at Bernheim in April and begin creating FEMMEomenal Bluegrass Botanicals. This exhibition celebrates and highlights ten historically significant Kentucky women through the invocation often native plants, inspiring deep connections to nature while educating the viewer on extraordinary women in Kentucky’s history. Because her project is heavily research-based, she forged ahead with the series from a distance and is currently completing her residency remotely in Skokie, IL.
The images for the exhibition originate from laboriously carved woodblocks, that will be printed and enlarged onto fabric banners to hang in trees within the arboretum or along a trail. When it’s safe for Boros to do so, she will reside at Bernheim and scatter these banners throughout the arboretum, creating a treasure hunt of historical importance that appeals to all ages. In the meantime, we are working with Boros to develop digital content around her work, creative practice, and the FEMMEomenal Bluegrass Botanicals project. Stay tuned to bernheim.org/AIRat40, YouTube, and other social media channels for digital content and updates on her arrival at Bernheim.
