Celebrating Fall at the Gift Shop with Local Artists

By Barbara Fields

Fall is such an exciting time at Bernheim and nowhere is that more evident than at the Visitor Center Gift Shop.

We are so proud to be able to shine a spotlight on local artists like Mary Ann Woolery-Bussey from Blue Lick Hollow and Farm who currently lives on a small hobby farm in Berea with her husband, a host of chickens, five cats and one energetic dog. The leaves, ferns and other botanicals utilized in her work are all gathered from their property and the surrounding Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Kentucky.

Another spotlighted artist is Bonnie Drake from Gourds by Drake, who has been a gourd artist since 1994. One day in a shop, she came across a gourd with a painting on it. After the shop keeper explained what a gourd was, she became intrigued by the fact that you could grow these gourds and dry them to become like a piece of wood on which you could do art. She feels each gourd is unique and full of character, just waiting for her to turn it into a piece of art.

And don’t forget about our delicious local Farms like Rattlesnake Hill Farm. This Kentucky Proud Farm was established in 1995 as a sustainable organic farm with an emphasis on gourmet, varietal garlic, heirloom vegetables, and culinary herbs. Their goal is to provide the consumer with the highest quality and value while preserving our small part of the planet through sustainable agriculture.

Be sure to stop in and start stocking up for the holidays! Members receive a 10% discount in the Gift Shop year-round, and 20% throughout November and December (Join during October and receive a $5 discount using the code BELONG). The Visitor Center is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily.
