Bernheim Forest to hold first-time summer camp

Camp will feature fun-filled nature activities and educational projects

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest announced the creation of a new day camp for children in summer 2021.

Camp Bernheim offers four one-week sessions for ages 6 to 12 years old and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Week 1 – June 14-18; Expert Explorers (ages 10-12) and Novice Explorers (ages 8-9)
Week 2 – June 21-25; Expert Explorers (ages 10-12) and Novice Explorers (ages 8-9
Week 3 – June 28-July 2; Expert Explorers (ages 10-12) and Novice Explorers (ages 8-9)
Week 4 – July 5-9; Novice Explorers (8-9) and Novice Naturalists (ages 6-7)

Campers will participate in experiences that build confidence and connection to the natural world, such as fishing, kayaking, creek walks, hiking, scavenger hunts, and fort-building.

“We are so excited to host this camp for summer 2021,” said Bernheim Director of Education Kristin Faurest. “This camp will offer the opportunity for children to connect with the natural world. After a year where many children were in virtual school all day, this camp will be a welcome respite from screens, and the chance to rediscover their imagination through play and exploration.”

Groups will enjoy various Kentucky habitats while learning about the many flora and fauna that call this state home. There will be time to get creative with many nature-based art projects, crafts, and discussions. Campers will leave each week with new friends, lifelong memories, and a deeper connection with the natural spaces around us.

The cost of Camp Bernheim is $200 a week for a member and $225 a week for non-members. To register, please visit Bernheim.org/CampBernheim.

Bernheim Forest believes in the importance of every child having access to nature, and is partnering with organizations to offer sponsored weeks for community groups later in July.
