AIR Program Overview
Application and Selection
What distinguishes the Artist-in-Residence program from the Environmental Artist-in-Residence program? Can I apply to both?
The Artist-in-Residence program is designed for visual artists working across various mediums who create nature-inspired artwork. In contrast, the Environmental Artist-in-Residence program specifically targets artists whose work addresses environmental issues and the climate crisis.
Artists may apply to both programs, but we request that separate proposals be submitted for each. If you choose to apply to only one, please select the program that best aligns with your work.
Is the residency open to writers, musicians, dancers, or choreographers?
The residency is currently open to visual and mixed-media artists, including those working with sound and performance art that incorporates visual elements. It is not available for writers, musicians, or dancers.
What are you looking for in references?
References should provide insight into your character and artistic practice, such as mentors, professors, fellow artists, or gallery owners. Please avoid references who, while reputable, do not know you well. References will be requested through the Slideroom application.
I applied in 2024. Do I need to reapply?
Yes, artists must reapply each year to be considered.
Do you accept international artists?
Yes, international artists are welcome. However, they are responsible for securing the appropriate visas and meeting any temporary immigration requirements. A working knowledge of English is required.
Can collaborations or collectives apply?
Yes, collaborations and collectives are welcome to apply. The stipend will be applied to the group as a whole. A single application should be submitted, including work samples from the group rather than individual members. The application must designate a primary contact and outline the group’s workspace needs. Due to housing limitations, collaborators will share accommodations.
Am I bound to my proposal if selected?
No, your proposal is not binding. We encourage artists to create work inspired by their experiences at Bernheim, which may evolve from the original proposal. The proposal serves as a starting point and demonstrates your initial concept.
Residency
Are there specific deadlines for the residency, or does the application apply to the year of selection?
This is an annual call, and residencies should ideally be scheduled or commenced within the year of selection. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate artists’ other commitments. Please include any specific timing needs in your submission.
Do I need a car for this residency?
While some artists have completed their residency without a car, having one is strongly recommended for easier exploration of the arboretum and natural forest areas. The nearest major grocery store is 8 miles away, and public transportation options are limited. Bicycles are available but are not suitable for traveling on Forest Hill Drive or for shopping for supplies.
Can my partner, child, or pet join me during the residency?
Partners and children may visit or stay with the artist during the residency, provided they do not interfere with the residency’s goals. Pets are not allowed in the lodging facilities, though exceptions may be made upon request. Service animals are welcome.
Does the residency include meals?
Meals are not provided; however, each lodging is equipped with a kitchen and basic cooking appliances to accommodate your needs. Visiting artists receive staff discounts at Isaac’s Café in the Visitor Center, which offers seasonal fare from Bernheim’s Edible Garden.
Do I have to stay on-site for the entire residency? Can I split the time?
Selected artists are required to live on-site. We recommend a stay of 6-8 weeks, but the residency can be split into two periods, with a minimum of three weeks per stint. While full immersion is preferred, flexibility is available.
How many artists are in residence at a time?
Typically, only one artist is in residence at a time, although there may be occasional overlaps of a few weeks. In such cases, artists will be housed separately. Applicants should be prepared to work independently, which can be either liberating or isolating, depending on personal preferences.
Program Requirements and Support
Do I need to complete a work of art by the end of the residency?
Completion of a work of art is not required. We prioritize meaningful work over rushed deadlines. Artists have up to a year to submit work in exchange for the residency. If creating a site-specific installation, its scale and scope should be planned in advance and approved by Bernheim staff.
What kind of art-making equipment does Bernheim provide?
The studio is equipped with basic art-making tools and limited supplies for communal use. Hand and power tools are available upon request, provided you demonstrate safe operation before use. If you require specific tools for your work, you will need to bring them with you.
Does Bernheim provide material support?
Formal material support is not provided, but natural materials such as fallen trees and plant matter are abundant and encouraged for creative use.
Feedback and Communication
Can you provide feedback on my application?
Due to the high volume of submissions, we are unable to provide feedback on individual applications.
