While there have been a number of visual hints of late, Sunday’s beginning of daylight savings time officially marked the transition from winter into spring for many of us. This changing of the seasons is a great opportunity to share the beautiful work created by 2019 Bernheim Artist in Residence Kathleen Lolley, a painter, mixed-media and collage artist from Louisville, Kentucky. While in residence, Kathleen explored stop-motion animation as a medium through which she created a series of visual vignettes incorporating found objects from Bernheim that highlights the interconnection of nature, spirit and the human experience. A Spell to Honor the Seasons of the Earth is a mesmerizing journey highlighting the beauty of Bernheim in a meditative approach that captivates anyone in its presence!

“I am very interested in exploring the unconscious influence of childhood in our adult lives. I use innocence and playfulness to explore my complex themes. My work is not about humans having a spiritual experience, but spirits having a human experience.” – Kathleen Lolley

2020 marked the 40th anniversary of Bernheim’s Artist in Residence program and the value that art adds to the natural environment. Established in 1980, this internationally renowned program annually awards artists the opportunity to live and create site-specific work inspired by their total immersion experience at Bernheim. As we enter into our 41st year of the program, we will continue to celebrate the contributions of the past that has allowed our visitors to experience nature in a new way while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s mission of connecting people with nature.
