Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Sarabande Books and The Baltic Writing Residency are pleased to announce their co-sponsorship of an annual Writer-in-Residence Program to be located at Bernheim. The goal of the program is to help realize its mission of connecting people with nature through poetry and literature.

Bernheim will provide the selected writers a comfortable place to live and work for a mutually agreed upon amount of time. They will oversee the daily needs of the writers and encourage and support their interactions with visitors, staff and other artists. The writers are expected to offer a reading or discussion during their stay. One event will take place at Bernheim. Sarabande and BWR will host another in the Louisville community.

Sarabande Books, a well-respected literary publisher and experienced facilitator of literary competitions, located in Louisville, will utilize its extensive literary network and reach in order to attract and nominate a nationally recognized or emerging writer. The Baltic Writing Residency program, also located in Louisville, will select a nominee using an anonymous committee of judges composed of an established poet and fiction writer, and one member of Harvard’s English Department. Candidates will be interviewed by all three partners before a final selection is made. Anyone interested in applying can do so through The Baltic Writing Residency.

The first Writer-in-Residence is poet Ann Townsend. She will inaugurate the program this summer at a date to be determined. Ms. Townsend, the Chair of the English Department at Denison University, is a Sarabande published poet and the author of two collections of poetry: Dime Store Erotics (1998), and The Coronary Garden (2005), and is the editor of Radiant Lyre: Essays on Lyric Poetry (2007), with David Baker. Her poetry, fiction and criticism appear in such magazines as Agni, Poetry, The Paris Review, The Nation, The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, Witness, and many others. In 2003-2004 she received an Individual Artist’s Grant in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, and also won the James Dickey Prize in Poetry, sponsored by Five Points magazine. Her poems have been anthologized in: Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century (2006), The Extraordinary Tide: New Poetry By American Women (2001), American Poetry: The Next Generation (2000), The Bread Loaf Anthology of New American Poets (2000), Imperfect Paradise: New Young American Poets (2000), and The Pushcart Prize XX (1995)

Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is an invasive plant found along stream sides and flood plains in Bernheim Forest. Ongoing efforts by the Natural Areas crew to stop the spread of this plant are making a difference. This species quickly out competes native spring wildflowers and alters forest understory dynamics. The goal is to keep this aggressive invasive plant from spreading into the pristine sections of Bernheim Forest found back in the hollows. In doing so, we are ensuring spring wildflowers and healthy forests for generations to come.

Most likely you were near a Koreanspice viburnum. From the Education Center to the Garden Pavilion, these shrubs have been filling the air with their heady perfume. Not only do Koreanspice viburnums smell gorgeous, but they also look beautiful. Light pink flowers emerge in clusters, turning white as they mature. While this shrub usually stays around four feet, if given space, it can reach up to eight feet. As you watch it bloom and smell the sweet fragrance, you will want it to get as large as possible! Place this shrub in afternoon sun, planting in virtually any soil type, as this beauty is also delightfully versatile. Also, remember to place your Koreanspice viburnum close to your home or patio, as you will want to enjoy it as much as you can during April and May.

PechaKucha20x20, Volume 11, takes place tomorrow at the Parklands at Floyds Fork in the Gheens Foundation Lodge. Bernheim is proud to be one of the organizers of this unique forum for sharing locally grown ideas. Quite simply, it is a presentation format where a presenter shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically while the presenter talks along to them.

The first PechaKucha Night was held in February, 2003, in Tokyo, with the idea being that because architects talk too much, as do many creative people, they should be required to present in a format where this won’t be a problem.

Now, PechaKucha Nights are a global thing, happening in over 500 cities, including ours.

Good PechaKucha presentations are the ones that uncover unexpected talent, or unexpected ideas. Some PechaKuchas tell great stories about a project or a trip. Some are incredibly personal, some are incredibly funny, but each is different and delicious, much like the offerings in a great “box of chocolates.”

Volume 11 is the first event produced under the new guest curator position, currently held by Abbey Smith. Smith will bring her focus on empowering women along with interests in local history, art, spirituality, community activism, and the environment.

Doors open at 7pm on Tuesday and the event starts at 8pm.

For more information visit www.pklouisville.org

This year the Bernheim natural areas department, with help from staff and select volunteers, completed 18 separate controlled burns. That’s a new record for Bernheim and a grueling task for the burn team. The burn season, which typically runs from mid-April to mid-May, got off to a slow start because of weather conditions but things finished up in grand style.

The first burn was conducted on March 21 and the last fire was completed on April 15th. In just 11 total days the team finished 18 burns totaling 82.49 acres. Burns were conducted in ten grassland units, seven grassland/forest units, and one forest only unit.

Controlled burns are used as one of the land management tools to help keep Bernheim ecologically healthy. Hats off to burn team leader Rick Caldwell and the entire burn team for another great year.

Ronnie Moore helps lead a grassland burn.
