Fall Wildflower Sighting – Ladies-tresses Orchids

By Kelly Vowels

ladies-tresses-10-4-2016Fall is a great time to come out to see fall wildflowers at Bernheim! Bernheim Forest has 12 different species of goldenrod, which is our state flower, as well as several different species of aster.

Bernheim is also home to seven different species of Ladies-tresses orchids (Spiranthes spp.). Spiranthes are small white orchids that bloom mostly in the fall, though some species will bloom earlier. Here at Bernheim, we have two species of Spiranthes that are imperiled in Kentucky, Great Plains Ladies-tresses (Spiranthes magnicamporum) and Yellow Ladies-tresses (Spiranthes ochroleuca). Great Plains are found in barrens, while the Yellow is found in open woods. These flowers are easily overlooked, as are many beautiful plants found here at Bernheim, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled while you’re exploring Bernheim in the beauty of fall color.
